Generous God, we lift up to your mercy that poverty which is a moral and social wound upon our country’s soul. In your goodness, help us to heal this wound by working to alleviate the suffering and pain of the poor.

You listen, LORD, to the needs of the poor; you strengthen their heart and incline your ear. You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed; no one on earth will cause terror again.

God of bounty, your son Jesus embraced poverty and taught that the poor are blessed, for “theirs is the kingdom of God.” Help us to step out of our certainties and comforts and keep our eyes fixed on him, so we can both see and serve him in the faces of the poor. Amen.

About 29.7 million people in the U.S. live in 'food deserts:' low-income, urban and rural communities that are more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Believe it or not, you or your neighbors may be living in one.

Catholic Charities recently received a request for aid from a mom who supports herself and her teenage son on $350 per month. In the past, she was able to maintain her apartment and care for her son on this very limited income. This year, she received an electric termination notice because she had to use some of her limited income to buy her son new school clothes, as he had completely outgrown everything. Unfortunately, there are currently no local programs that provide free back-to-school clothing and shoes for teenagers.
