"To love and serve our neighbors as ourselves."

Since 1954, the United Nations has declared November 20 Universal Children's Day. Today, Catholic Charities celebrates Universal Children’s Day by seeking to follow the example of Christ who said “Let the little children come to me.”

For example, Catholic Charities recently received a request for aid from a single mother of four children. Catholic Charities worked with another community agency to ensure this family of five is now in stable, affordable housing. Thanks to your support, Catholic Charities is able to help families and children when they need it the most. Generous contributions to Catholic Charities secured this family a safe, comfortable place to call home.

This November 20 and every other day of the year, you can walk in the footsteps of Christ and change the lives of children in your local community by partnering with Catholic Charities. Here are some of the ways you can make a difference in the lives of your youngest neighbors:

  • Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) is available to families with young children to alleviate an immediate financial crisis in area utilities, winter heating, emergency shelter, clothing and other basic human needs.
  • Pregnancy Support at Catholic Charities promotes a woman's physical and mental well-being during her pregnancy and throughout their parenting years. Support assists with physical needs such as baby diapers, food, clothing and supplies, as well as counseling for women and families experiencing parenting challenges.
  • Homeless Shelter Services is a resource for children and their mothers when home is not a safe place. The Mary and Martha House in Johnstown guides victims of domestic violence on a path towards healing and hope. It opens its doors to keep mothers and children safe and give mothers the foundation and training they need to become independent and escape their abuser.

You can help make this Universal Children's Day a day that truly makes a difference in Central Pennsylvania by giving to Catholic Charities. You can give securely on Catholic Charities’ website,, or send a donation to Catholic Charities, 1300 12th Avenue, P.O. Box 1349, Altoona, PA 16603.
