"To love and serve our neighbors as ourselves."

As we strive to change the community's perception of what our shelter is, we will periodically share anonymous stories of Martha and Mary House residents whose lives have been transformed thanks to this resource in Cambria County.

This story is about a mother and her two teenage children who moved into the house in fall 2016. The mother's health had been deteriorating over the years. She pushed through the pain and sickness to ensure her children had a roof over their heads and that they went to school each day.

As her health deteriorated, so did her ability to maintain their rental home. The apartment was determined inhabitable. So they turned to The Martha and Mary House.

"They came in and felt so many different emotions," said Danielle Bowers, Director and Lead Case Manager of The Martha and Mary House. "Over the month they were in the house, their family bond became stronger. They began to work together to overcome obstacles and issues."

During case management sessions, the family was able to re-evaluate and begin to create the new life that they wanted. They located safe and stable housing, which they are still living in today.
